Thanks for sharing Singapore Management University experience using Anaplan in the classroom. I hope it inspires additional universities to partner with Anaplan. There is huge value in giving students a real-life perspective and experience in the classroom.
My favorite phrase in the blog is "The course really helps them to appreciate a reality that they don't relate to, but one they'll soon have to master."
If anyone reading this blog would like to learn how their university can participate in University Connect I would be happy to explore the topic; if you are with a customer or partner organization I'm also happy to discuss how you can get engaged with universities like SMU / bring your "go to" university partners into our program.

Definitely more cat memes! 😼 I would love to hear from experts on tips & tricks. I finished up the Level 2 course last week and can't wait to apply what I've learned. Functions/formulas is an area I want to learn more about. I'm always looking for rules to keep it easy - when to use ( ) vs [ ]; SUM vs LOOKUP; tips in choosing between similar functions; etc. Looking forward to great discussions.

Hi Aaron, I'm excited to be a part of the Learner's Lounge! I lead the global University Connect program here at Anaplan. It is inspiring to see so many new learners joining the ecosystem and developing Anaplan model building skills. As learners work towards earning the certified model builder designation, they are opening doors for amazing career opportunities at both our customer and partner organizations. University Connect has been offering this learning opportunity to educators and students for awhile now, it is outstanding that all individuals wishing to expand their skill set have the chance to do so via Talent Builder. I love it that all learners can come together in the Learners Lounge. If there are professors or students in the Lounge, I am happy to connect with you to share additional ways to get plugged into the Anaplan network; if there are customers/partners seeking early talent's with an Anaplan skill set I can help there too. I am a learner as well, working my way through the on-demand certification content. I've completed Level 1 Model Building and The Anaplan Way; and am near the end of Sprint 1 in Level 2 Model Building. I look forward to collaborating with everyone as we all develop further model building expertise. These days I live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. I'm a firm believer in any vacation is a good vacation and have a bucket list a mile long of places I want to explore, but if I had to choose one location it would be Hawaii. Favorite beverage - if its during the workday, you will typically see me with a Latte; after hours I'm now exploring Bourbons Heather

Each year, Anaplan recognizes one student from across the University Connect program who has developed strong Anaplan knowledge and model-building skills, demonstrates leadership on a project team, acts as a coach/mentor to others, and has the potential to make an impact across the Anaplan ecosystem as a model builder, consultant, or analyst.
Courtney Koyama, California Polytechnic State University The University Connect team is pleased to announce Courtney Koyama, of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), as the 2020 Student Anaplanner of the Year!
Courtney has the distinction of being the first University Connect student across the program to be recognized as a Certified Anaplan Model Builder, having completed Level 1 and Level 2 Model Building courses as part of her IS Capstone at Cal Poly, followed by The Anaplan Way. She demonstrated her knowledge by mentoring senior project students on all courses. Courtney (@ckkoyama) graduates from Cal Poly this weekend with a Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), Information Systems. She was also a leader with the Asian American Christian Fellowship, planning events to cultivate female relationships and community. Cal Poly Visits Anaplan Headquarters
University Connect at CPX
Cal Poly is known for its innovative teaching and 'Learn by Doing' philosophy. It has been an active member of Anaplan University Connect since 2018. We have collaborated in several capstone experiences through our partnership with Professor Barry D. Floyd, Professor Leida Chen, and Professor Kevin Lerwachara. Student projects range from solving an FP&A challenge for a CPG company to creating a headcount planning model that connected to a territory planning model for a multinational technology company specializing in internet-related services and products. Because it takes a village to provide an amazing learning experience for students, University Connect brought in Master Anaplanner Byron Mikowicz to help support student model builders during the last quarter. Impetus Consulting also offered office hours for Anaplan Q&A.
Would you like to learn more? We have opportunities for professors to bring Anaplan into the classroom, for students to join an upcoming certification cohort, for customers and partners to bring a project to campus (or otherwise get plugged into university activities), and for Master Anaplanners to join us as mentors and coaches. Chief Executive Officer, Frank Calderoni; Student Anaplanner of the Year, Jaymin Patel; and Chief Planning Officer, Simon Tucker.
Connected Planning Xperience (CPX) 2019 offered students and faculty the opportunity to join the Anaplan family at the world’s largest business planning conference. This was the first time the University Connect group was invited to be actively engaged in CPX, and we made the most of it! From the pre-conference hackathon to the awards ceremony on the general session stage, our group was front and center—learning the latest about Anaplan, connecting with the ecosystem, and making plans for more engagement back on campus.
University Students at CPX
Simon Tucker talks with students at CPX. Students representing California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), Georgia Southern University, and Georgia State University took full advantage of everything CPX 2019 had to offer. All were nearing graduation or had recently graduated. Some joined the pre-conference hackathon, including our own Jaymin Patel, representing the Parker College of Business at Georgia Southern University. Jaymin’s team, the PandaPlanners, had the honor of winning 2 nd place at the hackathon. Congratulations!
Throughout the event, students could be found in the general sessions hearing the latest on Anaplan strategy from the ELT and were inspired by the many inspirational customer stories. They also participated in key topic deep dives during the breakout sessions and explored the expo hall. The key phrase, “I’m a student!” was the perfect conversation starter. Those with a post-graduation job solidified took the opportunity to learn all they could about Anaplan to prepare to apply that knowledge on the job. Those still deciding on their first career step learned about opportunities across the ecosystem in a partner role, a customer project, or at Anaplan. Some even had onsite interviews!
Three Cal Poly students were completing the last piece of a headcount planning challenge (model build) with a leading Anaplan customer last week as well. The team took several Anaplan model building and methodology training courses to prepare for the project, then followed The Anaplan Way methodology to develop the solution. Their project class experience resonated with customers hearing their story, with one business leader telling me, “I want to meet these students. We are tackling the same use case now!” All students discovered that the hands-on Anaplan experience developed on campus gave them critical additional skills that, combined with a strong degree, were a powerful combination.
Student Anaplanner of the Year
Jaymin Patel was also presented with the first-annual Student Anaplanner of the Year award by Frank Calderoni and Simon Tucker on stage at CPX (above). Jaymin’s story showcases the experience we expect many students to have as the University Connect program expands. He was introduced to Anaplan in a finance class on campus, completed several model builder courses to deepen his knowledge of the platform, and is now applying this knowledge as a data analyst intern at long-time Anaplan customer, Equifax.
University Faculty at CPX
“Our university is joining University Connect, and students are learning Anaplan,” was a conversation starter for faculty as well. Anaplan customers and partners were excited to hear that Georgia State University and Indiana University expected to join the program over the summer and had already held special Anaplan boot camp days to provide students with a hands-on Anaplan experience. As expected, our ecosystem gave a warm welcome and jumped in with offers to engage—helping the Anaplan program get off the ground on campus, bringing business challenges to the classroom, and exploring possibilities for internships and full-time early talent hiring. As the event wrapped up, one professor shared, “I can’t believe the engagement from everyone I’ve met. I have never experienced this at any industry conference I’ve been a part of.”
University / Business Connect at CPX
Customers visiting the University / Business Connect booth at CPX. The University / Business Connect booth at CPX was always busy, and typically there was a line of colleagues from across the Anaplan network. This made for long days at the booth but was incredibly inspiring at the same time. Customers and partners from around the world explored how they can get engaged with current University Connect member institutions to bring projects and challenges to the classroom and get plugged into hiring opportunities. Together, we explored how Anaplan will work with their go-to partner universities to bring Anaplan to their classrooms, ensuring companies have access to bright, Anaplan-skilled early talents. Master Anaplanners stopped by to offer their encouragement and expressed their willingness to coach faculty new to Anaplan, as well as to mentor students.
Faculty and students interacted with attendees at the booth, providing everyone with an amazing opportunity to connect and build their network. One business leader said, “These students are outstanding. Find me more!” Another commented, “We’ve got projects ready for students to tackle in the classroom. Thanks for introducing me to these faculty.” And a partner shared, “Our team is ready to support University Connect members. Let’s work together to make it happen.”

The Anaplan University Connect program hosted a group of top undergraduate students from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) Orfalea College of Business at the Anaplan headquarters in San Francisco for an incredibly interactive exploration of Anaplan and Connected Planning, including career opportunities and a Q&A session, featuring Chief Planning Officer, Simon Tucker.
Concepts that are core to an education at Cal Poly include learning by doing and putting theory into practice. Students brought their A-game to the session by demonstrating their knowledge of Anaplan and planning through creative questions and active participation in insightful discussions during their visit—despite a 3:30 a.m. campus departure earlier that day!
The session objectives aligned with Cal Poly’s learning approach and the goals of University Connect:
Build awareness of Anaplan as THE company driving the Connected Planning topic.
Introduce the Anaplan platform.
Inspire students to consider Anaplan as their employer of choice upon graduation.
Deepen our relationship with the university.
The Anaplan team also brought their A-game, showing the #AnaplanLOVE by demonstrating our culture and values, and together, created moments that mattered for the Cal Poly students.
I personally had the opportunity to whiteboard the Connected Planning / Anaplan story for the students. Cal Poly alum and Business Operations Manager, Byron Mikowicz, introduced the Anaplan platform, demonstrated a use case, and shared the Anaplan-on-Anaplan success story. Pete Lawson, Global Talent Leader, encouraged students to consider careers at Anaplan. Then, Cal Poly alum and Enterprise Account Executive, Nico Molino; Customer Experience Associate, Connie Ng; and Senior Business Partner, Trevor Shubert, joined Pete for the career panel and shared their perspective on everything from how to prepare for a career while still in school, to what it takes to be successful at Anaplan. The Q&A session led by Chief Planning Officer, Simon Tucker, was also a huge success.
The feedback on the event was overwhelmingly positive, including comments such as, “Best company tour we’ve been on,” “Anaplan made us feel so welcome,” and “[The] agenda was top notch!” Another attendee commented that it was an awesome afternoon—and we agree!
Will Anaplan host my university too?
University Connect is pleased to host our member and prospective member students at our headquarters or other offices, as well as visit your campus for a similar Anaplan day. Anaplan is committed to supporting universities that wish to provide students with knowledge of Connected Planning, a hands-on experience with the market-leading Anaplan platform.
To learn more, reach out to the University Connect team via email at UniversityConnect@Anaplan.com.
Can my company connect with University Connect members like Cal Poly?
The flip side of University Connect is Business Connect. Business Connect acts as a matchmaker between company and university. It gives companies the opportunity to bring projects and challenges to the classroom, allows them to develop deeper relationships with member universities and their students, and explore early talent recruiting.

Welcome to the Hackathon!
This one-day, pre-Connected Planning Xperience (CPX) hackathon provides participants with the opportunity to explore the platform, learn something new, receive guidance from Anaplan product experts, and network with like-minded colleagues—all while competing for prizes and bragging rights. Spend the day working in teams to develop your model and pitch your solution to a panel of judges before heading over to the CPX welcome reception. Then, take your learnings home to incorporate into your own company models.
More About the Challenge
The official challenge will be announced at the start of the hackathon. Similar to previous events, teams will be given three Anaplan features to incorporate into the model of their choosing. A guideline/best practice may be showcased for bonus points if addressed in the model. Beyond this, the sky is the limit! Be innovative. Be creative. Have fun with it!
What’s New This Year?
For the first time, Anaplan has invited its University Connect partners to join the hackathon. A small group of students (and maybe a handful of professors) will be joining the event. Students and professors have an amazing opportunity to learn more about Anaplan, further develop their modeling skills, and connect with the Anaplan ecosystem. On the flip side, this new audience will bring a new perspective to the model build and offer the chance to engage with Anaplan-skilled, early talents who are motivated to work in the ecosystem upon graduation.
Day: Monday, June 10, 2019 Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. PT Where: Anaplan Headquarters (50 Hawthorne Street, San Francisco, CA, 94107) Cost: Free! Pre-registration is required. (If you are unable to attend after registration, please let us know so others may join. The event will be at capacity.)

@AmyX , I'd like to give you another suggestion regarding talent. As @andrea.barrera noted, there isn't a job fair but I would encourage you to stop by the University & Business Connect booth. If your company has Anaplan skilled early-talent hiring needs we may be able to connect you to universities we partner with via University Connect. University Connect provides educational institutions with free access to the Anaplan platform, training, learning resources, student/faculty events, and support to help professors bring Anaplan into the classroom. These universities can be great sources of strong early talents who can hit the ground running in terms of putting their Anaplan skills to work as part of a CoE or other roles using Anaplan. The flip side of University Connect is Business Connect where we will connect companies to our members for recruiting - or, they can bring projects/challenges for students to tackle. We can also work with you to bring your 'go to' partner universities into the program. I will be onsite at CPX - please stop by the booth and chat, or we can schedule a time to meet if you'd like to learn more. Best, Heather

Hello All! I can't wait to join my first user group meeting with Anaplan - and the first virtual meetup as well! I live and work in the Pittsburgh area, and joined Anaplan before the holidays. I am leading the Global University and Business Connect program .. our team is working with amazing universities who are using Anaplan in their business and technology program so that students graduate with a strong degree AND Anaplan modeling skill set. At the event I want to listen and learn about what is happening across the Anaplan community - and where our programs can support. And of course - if there are companies attending that are in need of Anaplan-skilled early talents I'm happy to assist! Looking forward to the event, Heather
