In 2020, Certified Master Anaplanners demonstrated tenacity, compassion, and leadership by quickly getting up to speed on Anaplan’s newest technical trainings and giving their knowledge back to the ecosystem in turn. They responded to the unique circumstances of the year by jumping in to help their global community with Anaplan Helps, sharing their stories through authorship and public speaking, training new talent in the ecosystem, inspiring others with their use of the UX, and much more. Each person who carries a 2021 Master Anaplanner Certificate does so as proof of this accomplishment.
All certificates expire January 1 st , 2022, and a new set of maintenance requirements must be complete before that date in order to become a 2022 Certified Master Anaplanner. This year the recertification maintenance requirements will have the same spirit of what we did last year, acting as a shared measure of technical certifications and ecosystem contributions.
There are two things a Certified Master Anaplanner needs to do to maintain their certification: keep their technical certifications current and make an impactful contribution toward a more enabled ecosystem.
Be a 2022 Certified Solution Architect (for reference, see the 2021 requirements).
Collect 400* contribution points for qualifying activities.
Qualifying activities are determined by the Master Anaplanner Program. To qualify, a contribution will develop a customer’s connected planning landscape, directly enable emerging talent, amplify Anaplan’s brand, or contribute to the documented enablement record.
We’ll be using the same points system as last year, ranking each item based on impact and amount of effort.
More details for Certified Master Anaplanners are available in the Master Anaplanner User Group and will continue to come out throughout the year.

Anaplan Project Management App #1
By @Stacey Brooks, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“My favorite UX achievement so far is the Anaplan COE developed Anaplan Project Management App! Using our project management model originally downloaded from the app hub and customized to meet the needs of our governance and platform management framework, we converted many of the existing dashboards and views to much cleaner and streamlined pages within this UX App that outlines the user journey for our COE members, model owners, model admins, and model builders alike.
With a short training session provided, the release of this App has been highly successful and has encouraged buy-in from our model owners and model builders for new enhancements and use cases to be delivered in the UX! Additionally, it has eliminated some pain points of missing user story status updates and governance-required data entry points, such as test script location and reviewer sign-off!”
Customize your own App to track your new Anaplan implementations and to manage your live models. Create a Table of Contents that makes it easy to follow the steps, so your users don’t get lost.

Cloud Long Range Planning
By @nickealvarez, Certified Master Anaplanner, and Ariel Lin
“This past summer, our intern and I worked together to develop this page for our Cloud Long Range Planning model. I chose it because our business owner (Finance Manager, FP&A) was ecstatic that this page empowers his team to recognize trends and evaluate variances much quicker compared to with the classic UX equivalent dashboard. It’s so intuitive to use and looks so clean!”
Make your charts even easier to understand by using a Card in the center of the Board to link to another Page with more details, like Nick and Ariel did here.

Statistical Forecasting and Trade Promotion Management
By @lauren.levine, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“Here is a snapshot of a page where we combined the Statistical forecasting model with a new Trade Promotion Management Model. It shows a transition of a classic dashboard to the UX combined with new features.”

Create a streamlined reporting dashboard by combining KPIs and Charts.
By @CommunityMember115881, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“In this screenshot, I want to highlight to very useful features of Anaplan:
First: Dynamic time filtering. Using a pre-determined list of time filter options, users can shift with ease the way they look at their data (upper right of image).
Secondly: Dynamic conditional formatting. The conditional formatting applied to the actual sales figures auto-adjust to the variance threshold entered by the user, thus highlighting variances for each particular scenario (bottom of image).
These two singular features really help personalise each user Anaplan experience.”
Personalize each user’s experience by adjusting the time filters to match your audience and setting conditional formatting based on who’s logged in.

Adjust Context Selectors
By @Pat_Desmond, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“Variance reporting is a critical financial process that companies depend on. This page helps evaluate the variation between the forecast and plan and further breaks down where the variations occurred. By evaluating the variance, companies can make more informed budgets. This tool can help visualize the data for easy breakdowns and quicker solutions. Here switchover is in March and I have it so users can enter comments using a field card (center of image) as well which is a popular feature. I also like using combo charts (shown above) for visuals.”
Make it easy to engage by using a Field Card! Users can document their notes for the data by simply typing into the box.
Tried and true combinations to build a process that works for you.
By @maxst, Certified Master Anaplanner
“This is the Timesheet page of our company’s Time Tracker & Expenses model.
It has proven very easy to use (weekdays excluding bank holidays are loaded each month) and it’s very informative
Has clear dashboard elements at the top –
KPI cards (that weren’t available in classic) showing remaining Holidays Available and the number of Missing Inputs on the timesheet
Line chart showing the individual’s utilisation
Bar chart showing the individual’s top 5 clients over a specific period (here, since Jan 2019) with the more engaging colours now available
Other features include:
Filter to toggle between Current Month, Past Month and All Months
Using card titles as links to other pages
Line chart updates dynamically based on the model calendar Current Period to display the current month and preceding 12 months
Timesheet entries are sorted by date – this is important if dates are added to allow for extra billable days or splits into half days
Colour formatting to highlight where data is needed
DCA enabled so that Non-billable can only be selected when a Partner is selected
DCA is enabled so that if an employee selects a day to delete on his/her timesheet (because they have added it by mistake, for example), it is not possible for other employees to make a selection to delete a day on their timesheet; this prevents someone from running the action “Delete a Day” and accidentally deleting an entry from someone else’s timesheet. However, if someone has made a selection but for some reason not run the action, it is useful to identify who in the company has made such a selection, so that they can be invited to de-select or run the action. This Field card identifies who has made a selection.”
Easily keep track of key figures using KPI Cards and simple Charts to aid in planning decisions. Combining these visual aids with a number of Anaplan’s core customization features leads to a well-received App!

Revenue Forecasting Model
By @bha, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“This was a revenue forecasting model with data sourced from Salesforce. Incoming data would be categorized into three categories (soft backlog, hard backlog, and forecast pipeline) based on attributes and tags on how likely each opportunity was to actually close. Users would also be able to add a top level “judgment” as necessary. This model would essentially allow users to see how solid the pipeline coming in was so they could “firm up” any open opportunities or, look for additional work if the pipeline was low.”
Build out checks and balances in your App to make sure your insights are based off the most relevant information, like Belinda did here. In addition to this summary Page, users can view and edit the data, review the forecast, compare against upcoming actuals, and even read a glossary of definitions within one Application.
End user filters with line items
Inventory Scenario Planning
By @riteshkumar3, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“This UX page is from the Inventory Optimization application that I have created recently. This page guides an end user on the real time what-if scenario analysis process for their single echelon Inventory Optimization. The page at the start provides a quick overview on the workflow related to different custom scenarios that an end user is trying to prepare and is self-explanatory in terms of the steps that an end user needs to take to complete the scenario analysis process. The page provides good visualizations which can help an end user quickly understand the results from different custom scenarios as well as the bottom section of the dashboard facilitates a quick comparison around how each of the custom scenarios are different from the base. The page has good visualizations and is easier to navigate for an end user and can aid an end user in the decision making around the Inventory Optimization process.”
Starting with your end user’s decision-making process is a key part of following the U.S.E.R. Methodology. A guided planning process featuring dynamically selected images – described above -- is exactly what Ritesh’s stakeholders needed.
Set Retail Fee Rates
By a Certified Master Anaplanner.
“I like this one as it is graphically satisfying the user sees the Chart change as they enter in the data.”
Help your users visualize the impact of their inputs by pairing your input module in a Grid alongside the output module in a Chart or graph.
By @jruder, Certified Master Anaplanner
“I recently restructured and built out a Utilities specific FP&A, inclusive of a Tax Planning page that calculates effective tax rates to use for different states/jurisdictions, utilizing integrated financials. Through this page, an end user is able to see how different temporary and permanent differences, NOLs (Net Operating Losses), and tax credits applied effects the effective tax rate used for future financial planning.”
Sometimes, you just need to compare numbers in a grid. Use this structured approach to a Board if you want to combine rows of information and Charts in one view.
Boards vs. Worksheets
Financial Impact Analysis
By @Nik.Amin, Certified Master Anaplanner.
"We created the Pandemic Financial Impact Analysis page to evaluate financial impacts from the virus in order to determine appropriate ramping percentages. A decision-maker can determine appropriate actions based on a few possible scenarios."
Compare multiple options by creating rules to shape your forecasts when you set up the model. Then, let users input their expectations. Adding a key to go with your chart (top left) helps end users understand what they’re looking at.
Types of Cards
By @AzeemArif, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“This page evaluated the potential impacts of the pandemic considering hiring freezes and headcount adjustments. We developed this demo Page in order to make more informed business decisions. We knew that our company's workforce planning could change on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, we needed a model that could help us make the most informed strategic workforce decisions. This screenshot helps project what impact various hiring freezes will have.”
Use a Waterfall Chart to show how each subset of a list compares to the whole at a glance. Help your users make a detailed assessment by giving them an array of Context Selectors to hone-in on their target.
Incentive Compensation Management
By @brian_gallagher, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“Above is a page that is part of Cervello's incentive compensation management App my team and I developed this board in order to provide insights to sales managers on how their reps are performing. A few of the cards allow drill-through to detailed worksheets which we've identified as a best practice when designing the experience.”
A Board with good visuals is a great invitation to learn more about the data, and Worksheets enable you to see all the data at once. Link from a Card directly to a Worksheet with related data to create an intuitive experience (read more below).
Here are some details from Certified Master Anaplanner @bmfrancis007 about how the drill-through process works:
“An effective method to drive positive user experience is to create summary cards that contain high-level information and allow users to drill through into detailed information by leveraging shortcuts to worksheets. This allows us to keep pages visually appealing, providing quick and meaningful insights at a glance, while allowing for detailed level planning on worksheets.
Drill through navigation from summary cards to detailed worksheets provides users streamlined navigation from reported values to detail level calculations. Without drill through navigation, users would have to search for the worksheet related to the summary card.
In the above example we display a summary card with final payouts by employee, which is a high level report summarizing the group’s performance, and users are able to click “Payout by Employee” (card’s title) to open up the worksheet containing all the steps related to the payout calculation. The navigation back to the summary card is intuitive with an arrow button in the top left that returns users to the previous page."
Sales Rep Performance
By @cduvoisin, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“The team and I developed this App in order to provide insights to Sales Reps on their performance. The board shows a high-level summary/overview of the incentive compensation management process with pertinent information for sales reps. Two linked worksheets further break down the calculations for more insights. For example, if a sales rep wished to see which exact deals they’re being credited on, they could click the “Weighted Payout” card title (“Navigation Link”) and see a breakdown of their deals for a given period. They can also select various filter combinations to view deals by Period, Customer, Product Family, Product, and Compensation Measure.”
Using Boards and Worksheets together (and taking advantage of all of their features!) makes for a fully customizable experience.
Diversity Target Settings
By @kalbelo, Certified Master Anaplanner.
"The Diversity Target Settings page allows us to analyze the current employee makeup of our company. With this page, we can evaluate various regions, compare our actual employee makeup with our Target Goals, and track our company's progress over time."
To get a visual breakdown of a group, use stacked Column Charts and Area Charts. Having a Grid Card nearby makes it easy to compare the numbers.
Sales Performance Management
By @maxberail, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“Please find above one of the first Page I built during the last Hackathon which occurred during CPX Paris on 16 th October 2019.
I worked for the international client LafargeHolcim on a Sales Performance Management (SPM) topic in less than 6 hours. I built this board which allows the Regional Sales Manager to define objectives to his sales team locally depending on a list of KPIs and to adjust the KPIs’ thresholds. And finally after a first pitch in front of the client & Anaplan France team and a second one in front of all the CPX Paris visitors, we won the trophy with my colleague against Deloitte France 😊 ”
While this Page is from the UX’s beginnings, it boasts some of the key features that make up the core of the experience today.
Product Group Split Forecast
By @FabianC, Certified Master Anaplanner.
“The Board solves a problem the customer had for a long time. To split their forecast down to Product group, own/external brand, country and company. Also to be able to work with changes rather than update every single month, which is solved by the roll forward boolean. When the product group share of sales is updated for one product group the rest is recalculated so that sales always is 100%.”
Sometimes, you just need to compare numbers in a grid. Use this structured approach to a Board if you want to combine rows of information and settings in one view.
Boards vs. Worksheets

As the situation with COVID-19 evolved around the world, it became apparent that the Anaplan community wanted to help people on the frontlines respond to the crisis—and could do so using the Anaplan platform.
In the face of seemingly unlimited new problems that needed to be solved, we called upon our own community of experts who could quickly respond to the challenge: Certified Master Anaplanners. With less than one week’s notice, people from around the globe raised their hands to participate in a five-day virtual, global hackathon. They gave up precious work time, as well as evening and weekend hours, to work on ways to support the efforts to fight the pandemic crisis using the Anaplan platform.
We kicked off the event with a 26-hour open call that lasted from 9 am in Melbourne to 5 pm in San Francisco. This group of agile, independent thinkers organized themselves into groups— in some cases with people they didn't previously know—to form teams that spanned companies and locales. Anaplan employees from around the globe volunteered their time to ensure the call would stay open for the entire duration, staying on for shifts of up to four hours to advise participants.
Contributors were given the option of building out a use case that we provided or coming up with something on their own. Unsurprisingly, each group was inspired to tackle a problem close to their hearts, using the technology to create solutions for four lines of business across six industries. These include a freight calculator, a hospital staffing model, an inventory planning tool for food banks, and an emergency supply chain response tracker, among many others. One participant, a true follower of best practices, even created the framework for a COVID-19 Datahub that companies can populate with source data and use in conjunction with some of the other models.
The event concluded with 17 applications submitted by Master Anaplanner teams from six countries, representing each of the major regions. Customers, partners, and Anaplan employees banded together to make this vision a reality, and we’re proud to say that the models are now available to download on the Anaplan Helps page.
From supporting local volunteer efforts to creating planning solutions for government bodies, they did it all. Hear from eleven of the Certified Master Anaplanners themselves on why they got involved, and how their ready-made models will impact the world:
Diana Xu, Equifax (Hospital Staffing Model, USA)
"I am happy that Anaplan offered me and my team an opportunity to participate in helping people during this pandemic, as Anaplan's features allow models to easily be customizable, scalable, and easy to set up for organizations. My team wanted to give back to the healthcare industry, many of whose workers are near and dear to us and are currently risking their own lives to help others, so we decided to focus on a problem that would impact them."
Justin D’Onofrio, Platform Specialists (Restaurant Continuity Planning, USA)
“Our company office (and my hometown) is in Montclair, NJ. It’s a close-knit community of great people, mom-and-pop retail, and amazing restaurants. For the restaurants specifically, everyone local is doing their best to support them during this difficult time via takeout and gift card purchases. Leveraging Anaplan, I also wanted to think about how to help them (and restaurants in a similar position elsewhere) model out the uncertainty of that transition and how to keep some level of continuity and cash flow.”
Zaf Kamar, Lionpoint Group (COVID-19 Outbreak & Recovery Management, USA)
“First and foremost, thank you to all those working to deal with this crisis firsthand. As we watched the news unfold about the spread of COVID-19, we stood horrified at the ever-rising infection and death rates. We refreshed the Johns Hopkins dashboard several times per day, hoping to see some trace of the disease slowing its spread. We found ourselves wishing we could see what course the disease might take—and when Anaplan called and provided a platform through its Anaplan Helps initiative to do something about it, we jumped at the opportunity.
We created a model through the eyes of governmental and public health leaders. Show me the data, where is the disease, how is it progressing, how can we model what it will do, and what are the impacts of policies that we can enact? We realized that there could sadly be avoidable deaths if our healthcare systems become overburdened and healthcare professionals are forced to make impossible decisions due to scarcity of resources. But if we can predict disease rates early enough, maybe we can do something about it and minimize avoidable deaths.”
Jared Dolich, Columbus Consulting (ESCoRT Emergency Supply Chain Response Tracker, USA/Canada)
“The coronavirus is a global concern. The team at Anaplan responded quickly by setting up a special Anaplan tenant and challenged the Anaplan Community to build creative solutions to assist with the pandemic resolution. At the same time the hackathon challenge went out, Governors Phil Murphy (NJ) and Andrew Cuomo (NY) described their challenge to procure, set up, and distribute equipment, personnel, and beds to prepare for the apex of the COVID-19 impact on the citizens of their respective states. In three days, we met the governor’s challenge by creating a Connected Planning environment that combines scenario planning, top-down and bottoms-up planning, and a mechanism to manage the supply chain daily as the pandemic conditions change. Thank you Anaplan, Columbus Consulting, and David Edwards Consulting for all your support!”
Camille Maurice, MeltOne Advisory (COVID-19 - Employee Risk Tracking, France)
“We chose to join the initiative because as all companies we are affected by the pandemic and needed to quickly build an app to gather and analyze data in a quick and simple way. We would have chosen Anaplan regardless, because it’s a tool we like and use to follow our activity on a daily basis. The hackathon was just a good opportunity to share it with the world.”
Espen Grepperud, Bluesprint (Freight Calculator, Norway)
“I think it was a good initiative from Anaplan and thought I should contribute. It is a simple model, but it solves challenges calculating cost of freight per SKU, from different places at ZIP-code level based on pallets and containers. It takes care of minimum and maximum pallets per container, which varies from place to place of origin and this is always a hassle to solve. The calculator allows several users to calculate different products simultaneously. The model is based on a similar model made for a customer of ours who operates within the logistics industry. The base register has to be updated with the local rates.”
Korey Cheung, Weston Foods (Inventory Planning - Food Bank, Canada)
“I decided to join this hackathon because I was inspired by a message sent out to my company from Galen Weston about how a customer thought that the staff in the grocery stores were considered heroes. As someone working in the food industry, I thought that it would be appropriate for me to contribute by creating an Anaplan solution to assist food banks that are struggling to meet the needs of the people during this pandemic.”
Tristan Colgate, Fidenda (COVID-19 Volunteer Matching, UK)
“One of the most frustrating things about the COVID-19 situation is the knowledge that there are heroes in our health and public services working flat out, whilst I am in the comfort of my home not being able to contribute. So, I decided to do something, and you can help. Here in the UK, over 500k people signed up to be volunteers to help support our 1.2m vulnerable people. It is a mammoth task to assign volunteers to help the most vulnerable people. I have almost completed developing an application that performs this matching automatically, using linear optimization to ensure the closest volunteer to a vulnerable person is assigned (based on publicly available postcode data). It respects constraints like the maximum number of assignees a volunteer can have. I'm doing this in conjunction with Anaplan who has set up a hackathon for fellow Master Anaplanners like myself to contribute with applications that can help combat COVID-19.”
Jason Blinn, Twelve Consulting Group (Inventory Shortage Planning, USA)
"At Twelve Consulting Group, we’re committed to giving back to the community and this was an opportunity to utilize our unique skill-sets to help organizations at the frontline of this crisis. Our goal was to create a flexible and easy-to-use tool that organizations could quickly adopt to plan their supply from donations and purchases under one platform to help meet the ever-changing demand of critical items."
Steve Bows, Cornerstone Performance Management (Hospital Resource Planning, Australia)
“For those of us in Australia, where we’ve been lucky enough to keep the spread contained (for now), we still have time to work out how to cope with it when it arrives. So, when the call went out for Master Anaplanners to help plan the potential impact of COVID-19 in all sectors of the economy, I knew that a model to predict the number of hospital beds (and other resources) required would be the most useful thing I could contribute.
My enthusiastic colleagues at Cornerstone–Brent Gorham, Paolo Malafaia, and Reza Makouei–had exactly the right skills to help me get this model built in the six days we were allowed. I’d like to thank all of them for their help, and also James Wakefield from Servian and Jan Sypkens from Anaplan, who provided me with the daily feed of WHO case data from their COVID-19 Data Hub – a great example of cross-partner collaboration.
As it happens, we already have interest from a public health body here in Australia who are looking at a rapid deployment of the model, so I already feel that we’ve achieved something useful!”
Sarah Roberts, City of Tallahassee (Expense Tracking for FEMA Reimbursement, USA)
“When I learned about the global Master Anaplanner initiative to assist organizations in dealing with the impact of COVID-19, joining in was a no-brainer. I work for city government and one of our biggest challenges during declared emergencies is to correctly track event-related expenditures for FEMA reimbursement. Anaplan’s agility, accessibility and flexibility make it the best platform for a model that allows all users across the organization to document and monitor those expenses and I hope this model helps many other governmental, tribal and non-profit agencies.”

The Master Anaplanner Program formally launched maintenance requirements, effective starting calendar year 2020. Participation is required for all members who wish to retain their designation as a Certified Master Anaplanner for the following year (2021) and will continue on an annual basis thereafter.
The Master Anaplanner Certification is a relevant and trusted designation of experts in the Anaplan ecosystem which requires members to meet certain standards to continue to qualify for and retain this esteem. As the program enters its fourth year, we take our responsibility very seriously as stewards of the program to make sure that a current Certified Master Anaplanner is always a true Anaplan expert, regardless of when they were certified. This naturally led to the idea of maintenance requirements, so the entire ecosystem has insight into the impact and expertise of the Community.
The Master Anaplanner Program will continue to evolve and support a strong and thriving ecosystem of model builders and Anaplan champions.
This maintenance program is built entirely around rewarding impactful contributions and providing a stage and spotlight for Certified Master Anaplanners to shine! We’ve valued different contributions based on the impact they have on the ecosystem and the effort involved to complete them, which include items from speaking at Anaplan’s Connected Planning Xperience to sharing knowledge through best practices to engaging with users in the Community. Think of this as a rewards-program-meets-excellence-requirements.
Certified Master Anaplanners are the pioneers of Connected Planning who are building the best practices within the industry. They are technical experts that represent the top 1% of Anaplan users, and in their everyday jobs evangelize the platform by architecting and deploying innovative Connected Planning solutions.
Certified Master Anaplanners will continue to amplify their voice, share their stories, and propel the forward momentum of the Anaplan platform. In addition to these engagements, they will need to maintain a base level of training and stay active in their Anaplan models.
The Master Anaplanner Team has been thrilled to host such a great community of planning experts thus far. We always have a great time showcasing their contributions to the ecosystem, and we look forward to having an even bigger year next year. Thanks for the confirmation, @Matthew_Kuo ~ glad you're in.
I've been wishing I could give out kudos too, @andrewtye; hopefully your shout-out will have the same effect!
I hear you on the address form. Unfortunately, the shipping service we use requires a State/Region/Province regardless of country. It rejects our submission if we don't have all fields filled in for each person, so it helps immensely if you've provided the details. I've done some creative searching over here and can confirm you all have a region, even if not immediately apparent!
Alternative solution: I have yet to try this in practice, but I suspect that repeating your city or country in the State/Region/Province field could produce a fine result if you truly don't have one. Maybe a guinea pig or three can try it out so we can update the process. Please send me a PM if you've repeated either of the fields and I'll keep an eye on it.
Ameneh EDIT: I've been thinking about this more and am wondering if something as simple as "n/a" would work. Will experiment and report back!
EDIT 2: Confirmed that duplicating the country in the state field will work, so please do this for now if you don't have a State/Region/Province. Will look to improve this experience in Master Anaplanner Home in a coming update!

“Certified Master Anaplanners are the pioneers of Connected Planning who are building the best practices within the industry. They are technical experts that represent the top 1% of Anaplan users, and in their everyday jobs evangelize the platform by architecting and deploying innovative Connected Planning solutions…
…the Master Anaplanner Program will continue to evolve and support a strong and thriving ecosystem of model builders and Anaplan champions.”
Our team has been thrilled to host such a great community of planning experts . We always have a great time showcasing your contributions to the ecosystem and we look forward to having an even bigger year next year. T hank you for all you do and keep up the amazing work!
We know it’s not easy being the top 1%, and it takes a lot of investment to keep it up. To reward you for your work and to ensure your status continues to be highly regarded, The Master Anaplanner Program is launching maintenance requirements starting calendar year 2020. Your participation is required if you wish to retain your Master Anaplanner Certification for the following year (2021).
Maintenance requirements will be in effect on an annual basis with a structured scoring system, so you can now earn points for the all of the things you have already been doing to give back to our ecosystem . All you need to do is accumulate at least 400 points by the end of the calendar year, and you’re all set!
Participation is required to maintain your certification for 2021
400 points are needed
Collect points by opting-in to engagement opportunities
Valid contributions must be in calendar year Jan – Dec 2020
Deadline for completion is Dec 31 st , 2020
Master Anaplanner Home model is source for registering and tracking engagement opportunities

Why Maintenance Requirements?
“I'm supportive of having some type of requirements especially if they are molded in a way that helps Master Anaplanners stay current.” – @Tiffany.Rice
"I think to stay current you need show that you have maintained a level continuous learning over a period.” @sean_culligan
The Master Anaplanner Certification should always be a relevant and trusted designation of the experts in the Anaplan ecosystem. As the program enters its fourth year, we take very seriously our responsibility as stewards of the program to make sure there is no doubt in the market that a current Certified Master Anaplanner is always a true Anaplan expert, regardless of when they were first certified. This naturally led to the idea of maintenance requirements, so the entire ecosystem has insight into the impact and expertise of this community.
One of the most substantial benefits of this certification is the ability to build your professional brand and showcase your skills and expertise globally both within our ecosystem and beyond. This maintenance program is built entirely around rewarding you for your current contributions and providing a stage and spotlight for all of you. In addition to bringing you opportunities to make your mark, this process will also create a place for you to collect your work and create a personal library of your contributions.
As an early adopter of the Platform, you got in on the ground floor of this growing ecosystem. The activities we selected directly influence the next generation of the Anaplan ecosystem, so as this ecosystem expands and thrives you will receive a accelerated benefit from its success. Additionally, some tasks are required, such as core training and continued familiarity with the model building experience, to ensure your skills stay sharp.
”I believe having a certain number of hours under you belt and evidencing re-training and contributing to support the community are all very important factors.“ - @usman.zia
The maintenance requirements are composed of engagements that you and other Certified Master Anaplanners have already been voluntarily involved in. With the help of your input, our team took the opportunity to compile all of the Certified Master Anaplanners’ contributions to date, measured the impact and effort for each engagement, and translated them into points for you to accumulate.
Very few items are mandatory for all of you, and how you reach your maintenance requirement is entirely up to you . You can continue with what you have already been doing or review our recommended engagement to get inspired to try new opportunities. Or, try out something you haven’t done before! Beyond making a splash in the ecosystem, engaging with these opportunities will allow you to really hone-in what you know and c ement your place as a leader and pioneer.
This year, 2020, is our pilot year, so we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we adapt throughout the year and finalize the framework for subsequent years.
“If it's built out to ensure I'm still engaged, keeping up with Anaplan, can get my hands dirty if needed...then I should be fine.” – @greggil
Our point system is directly tied to two key factors: IMPACT and EFFORT. This combines the benefit that each activity has on the Anaplan ecosystem, and how much time and energy is required to complete the task. For each task, we assessed the combination of those two values, with more points awarded to tasks that scored higher.
The requirement number of 400 points came from looking at Master Anaplanners who are in good standing with the program, and we set the minimum requirement to allow all of them to comfortably retain their status. The goal here is not to increase the expected contributions of any Certified Master Anaplanners, nor to decrease the size of the program or remove anybody. The goal is to formalize the current expectations of how a Certified Master Anaplanner engages within the ecosystem, while providing a clear path for anybody who is no longer interested to opt out and be removed from the program in a way that is explicit.
Like any good planners, we used a data-driven decision-making process, and we employed several planning-based approaches to select the points per activity and the total required points for maintenance. For example, here are some of the analyses we conducted:
We looked at the historical averages of our prior Certified Master Anaplanners who have been around for longer than one year, removed the outliers who were over or under engaged, and found the level of engagement that would have allowed all of those Certified Master Anaplanners who continue to be positive, active contributors in our ecosystem to retain their certification.
We looked at future capacity to host all your contributions, the availability of each of the engagement opportunities, and the future forecast and growth of our Certified Master Anaplanner pool. We added a wide variety of opportunities so there is enough for everyone to participate in and will promote additional options throughout the year. This way, everyone will be able to meet their maintenance requirements and retain their certification if they choose to participate.
We did some scenario planning based on the initial assumptions on points from the earlier analyses. We looked at which types of activities would be required to maintain certification and how many Certified Master Anaplanners are currently doing those activities (see our sample profiles below), to ensure that people with different types of interests all had the same viable path to maintain their certification while putting in roughly the same amount of effort.
We benchmarked our plan against other professional certifications, compared the level of effort of ours as compared to theirs, and determined where it would be appropriate for the values to fall. Thanks @bdeaton!
We considered how these engagements relate to the Master Anaplanner of the Year designation. This point system is an evolution of the process we used when selecting the 2019 Master Anaplanner of the Year, and in line with what we plan to use to select the 2020 recipient.
Based on this analysis, we are confident that you will be able to have an impact on the ecosystem, have time to do your day job, and retain your certification.
Optional Add-on: Specializations
Anaplan is an extremely flexible platform, so it is no surprise that many customers use it in wildly different ways. We don’t expect all of you to look or act the same, or to be experts on every single piece of functionality across the entire platform, so we are taking the first step to differentiate those unique and separate areas of expertise into our top-level certifications for those of you who opt-in.
We’re starting by launching a pilot just to the current group of Certified Master Anaplanners, and we have tied the specialization qualifications to the same activities as the maintenance requirements to kick things off so there is nothing separate you need to do to track your progress and work towards a specialization.
There is no requirement that anybody achieve a specialization certification. We know that some of you are interested in an idea like this, and we believe that many of you are already demonstrating your expertise in these areas in the ways that we will now be tracking and recognizing.
The specializations options are:
Center of Excellence
Transformation & Process
UX & Design
Solution Implementation Expert
TBD: Based on your contributions and themes that arise therefrom
Stay tuned for more details on how to earn a specialization badge, coming in January.

The 2019 Connected Planning Xperience (CPX) was an incredible event for everybody who attended—from the unique venue and pier experience to the new product announcements and launching of a comprehensive set of model-building best practices. The experience was particularly special for Certified Master Anaplanners—our highest-qualified Anaplan experts and champions—who we really rolled out the red carpet for this year.
The Master Anaplanner Connected Planning Xperience
For the past few years, we’ve treated our Master Anaplanners as VIPs at our annual conference, and this year was our most extravagant celebration of these experts yet. There was special access to an exclusive lounge where Master Anaplanners took a breather from the intensity of the conference and were able to connect with like-minded experts. Once there, they received high-quality Anaplan swag, such as boutique local truffles and a Master Anaplanner-branded Patagonia jacket—though the golden lanyards proved to be the star of the show, setting Master Anaplanners apart from the crowd.
One of the most unique and new experiences this year was a private breakout session where six members of our Executive Leadership Team took time out to connect with Master Anaplanners directly in a more intimate setting, emphasizing their value to the Anaplan ecosystem and discussing their critical role in evolving and maturing the program. With key takeaways, such as individual ownership for training three new Master Anaplanners and dedication to additional contributions in the Community and Product roadmap, the message from our leadership was clear: The success of our company and platform are tightly linked with the success of our Master Anaplanners, and we are committed to investing in their success for the long haul.
What We Heard
Paying special attention to the details and creating a welcoming custom experience for Master Anaplanners was a huge hit! One customer said that they especially appreciated the perks of the dedicated lounge and custom-curated swag, making them feel really special. And we were thrilled to hear that the Master Anaplanner certification reminded people of the top Oracle and SAP certifications. We are always looking for new ways to show how much we value our Master Anaplanners, and the positive feedback received after CPX affirmed that our commitment is in the right place and working well.
We believe that Master Anaplanners are the most engaged and excited participants at our events, and we want to do everything in our power to help them get the most of their experience. Even the little touches, like having a private place to charge your phone, can make a huge difference. We’re glad that Master Anaplanners appreciated our efforts to enhance their conference experience.
As our ecosystem continues to grow and mature, it is crucial that we identify our top experts and treat them like the rockstars that they are. We know that the future of our technology is dependent on the success of our most savvy users, and we will continue investing in this program to ensure the next generation of Anaplanners have a well-defined and reliable set of role models to lead the way.

Connecting Post-Conference With Master Anaplanners
CPX was an amazing opportunity for Master Anaplanners to connect and share their visions of Anaplan and Connected Planning, but that's just the beginning! There are plenty of ways to connect with Master Anaplanners after the conference. While the best way to get the ear of a Master Anaplanner is to become one yourself (and gain access to things like the Master Anaplanner lounge and the private Master Anaplanner Community User Group), you can also find Master Anaplanners at your local user group meetups and hanging out on the Community discussion boards. Whether you spot them by seeing their golden conference lanyard, their Master Anaplanner Patagonia, or the Master Anaplanner badge on their Community profile, you’d be surprised at how close by the nearest Master Anaplanner truly is—and they’re always willing to lend a hand to somebody in need of some quick model-building support.
We hope that our Master Anaplanners are feeling the Anaplan love and that everybody had an incredible time at CPX, regardless of your certification level. Please let us know if you have any questions about the Master Anaplanner program or if there’s anything we can do to help, by emailing us directly at MasterAnaplanners@anaplan.com .
