Is it better to use CODE(ITEM( SKU List)) or to use SYS SKUDetails.code?

Hello, I need to concatenate two codes because I am generating a combined list.

My first instinct was to utilize the function (CODE(ITEM()), but the example I saw in ANAPEDIA used the the systems module Line item [SYS SKUDetails.code].
Given that I don't even have a system module, I'm unsure if doing it this way is a bad idea or if they are just equivalent.

(I used the term SKU to make it simpler, but my combined list includes Store and School, so I had not considered developing a system module for this.)
