I know this is a long shot… is it at all possible for users to manually select both the Parent and the Child in the same grid like other applications (I believe Salesforce can do it) in the screenshot below?

The only feature that somewhat allowed this kind of functionality was breakback but it only works for number formatted lines.
There's a similar discussion here, but I'm afraid it doesn't really help for your scenario.
