TALENT BUILDER SUCCESS STORY - Meet Cristian Pineda
Meet Cristian Pineda, a Talent Builder graduate who landed a role with Keyrus. Read through his story as he answers key questions about how he navigated his certification journey, shaped his career path, and ultimately secured his role.
1. What made you choose Anaplan specifically? What stood out to you compared to other tools or career paths?
Before discovering Anaplan, much of my professional experience was centered around operational analysis, KPI tracking, and reporting. I worked extensively with Excel and several SaaS platforms to monitor performance, improve workflows, and support operational decision-making.
As I gained more experience in analytics and process optimization, I became increasingly interested in how organizations plan their growth and align operational strategy with financial goals.
What stood out to me about Anaplan was its ability to connect planning across multiple business functions within a single platform. Unlike traditional spreadsheets or disconnected systems, Anaplan allows organizations to build dynamic and scalable models that support real-time decision-making. For me, it represented a natural progression from operational analytics into enterprise planning.
2. What was the most challenging part of your Talent Builder journey? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges was shifting my mindset from traditional spreadsheet logic to the structured modeling approach used in Anaplan.
In spreadsheets, calculations are often cell-based, but Anaplan requires thinking dimensionally—understanding how lists, modules, and line items interact across the model.
I overcame this by consistently practicing and revisiting the training exercises multiple times until the modeling logic became more intuitive. Breaking problems into smaller components also helped me understand how each part of the model connects within the broader architecture.
3. How did the Anaplan Community support you through your Anaplan journey?
The Anaplan Community played an important role in my learning journey. It provided access to discussions, best practices, and real-world examples from experienced model builders.
Whenever I encountered challenges, reviewing community discussions helped me better understand how others approached similar modeling scenarios. It was not only helpful for solving problems, but also for learning better modeling practices and understanding how Anaplan is used across different industries.
4. What advice would you give to independent learners about building visibility in the Anaplan ecosystem?
My advice would be to actively engage with the ecosystem while learning.
Participating in the Anaplan Community, connecting with other professionals, and sharing your learning journey can help build visibility and accelerate your development. I also recommend focusing on building models that simulate real business scenarios such as sales forecasting, workforce planning, or operational planning. Demonstrating how your models solve real business problems can help showcase your skills and understanding of the platform.
5. How did you first hear about the opportunity at Keyrus?
I became aware of the opportunity at Keyrus during a transition in which the company expanded its Anaplan consulting capabilities and integrated additional talent into their team. This created an opportunity for professionals developing their expertise in Anaplan to join a consulting environment and begin contributing to real implementation projects.
Although I am still at the beginning of my journey at Keyrus, I am currently working on my first project. The knowledge I gained through the Talent Builder training and the Anaplan Community has already been very valuable. It has helped me better understand what is expected in a real implementation environment and apply the “Anaplan way” of thinking. This foundation has helped me organize my ideas and structure the tasks I’ve been assigned more effectively.
6. Did your Talent Builder certification help you in landing your current role?
Yes, absolutely. The Talent Builder certification played a crucial role in helping me secure my current position at Keyrus. In fact, without that certification, I would not have been able to access the opportunity that ultimately led to my current role.
The program demonstrated that I had a solid understanding of Anaplan modeling principles and best practices, and it gave employers confidence in my ability to contribute to real implementation projects. For me, the Talent Builder program was the gateway to beginning my career in the Anaplan ecosystem.
7. Which other or current skills that you have were directly relevant to your current role?
Several of the skills I developed earlier in my career translated directly into my current role. These include advanced Excel modeling, KPI tracking and performance analysis, operational reporting, dashboard development, and experience working with SaaS operational platforms.
Because Anaplan models represent real business processes, having experience analyzing workflows, operational performance, and business metrics helped me better understand how to translate business requirements into structured planning models.
8. How did you prepare for your interviews?
My preparation focused on both the technical and business aspects of Anaplan.
On the technical side, I reviewed Anaplan modeling concepts and best practices, and made sure I understood the logic behind building scalable models. On the business side, I focused on explaining how connected planning supports better decision-making and aligns different areas of the business.
Being able to communicate both the technical and business value of Anaplan was an important part of the preparation process.
9. What advice do you have for current learners who want to become Professional Model Builders?
My biggest advice is to focus not only on learning the platform but also on understanding the business problems that Anaplan is designed to solve.
Practice building models that simulate real planning scenarios such as revenue forecasting, workforce planning, or operational capacity planning. Consistency is key—the more you practice modeling and explore real use cases, the more natural the Anaplan logic becomes.
The Talent Builder program provides a strong foundation, but continuing to learn, experiment, and engage with the community will help you grow into a confident and effective Professional Model Builder.
